In September 1976, the 100th SRW was inactivated and OL-OA became Detachment 2 of the 9th SRW, All U-2 operations were consolidated along with the SR-71 at Beale AFB in California. The 9th SRW was later renamed the 9th Wing and as it came under ACC it was again renamed the 9TH RW. During October 1994, Det 2 of the 9th RW became the 5th Reconnaissance Squadron. |

OLYMPIC FIRE Missions were
flown from Davis Monthan AFB from Aug 1972 to May 1974 by the 100th SRW.
(Area of coverage - Cuba) And it was also used by Det 5 of the 9th SRW
at Patrick AFB (Area of coverage - El Salvador / Nicaragua ) until the OL closed in late 1992. In 1994 U-2 68- 0338 deployed from Palmdale to Patrick AFB OPERATING LOCATION - URBAN FIRE (OL-UF) to monitor the situation In Haiti which was deteriorating by flying OLYMPIC FIRE missions. ( July 1994, as repression mounted in Haiti and a civilian human rights monitoring mission was expelled from the country, the United Nations Security Council adopted United Nations Security Council Resolution 940, which authorized member states to use all necessary means to facilitate the departure of Haiti's military leadership and to restore Haiti's constitutionally elected government to power) This aircraft was manned by crews from the 99th SRS at Beale. While at the OL, 68-0338 which was a test bird from Palmdale passed the 20,000 flying hours mark. Both Operating Locations (OL's) and missions sometimes carried the same suffix as in OL-OF for Operating Location Olympic Flare ( OL- OF) Det 5 9th SRW Patrick AFB flying OLYMPIC FIRE missions. OLYMPIC (strategic program) --- , Olympic Fire , Photographic. Flame , SIGINT. Torch, COMINT. Game, PHOTO / SIGINT. Race, SAMPLING. Meet, PHOTO. and Flare which was both PHOTO and later as in Desert Shield/ Storm a combination of PHOTO / SIGINT / COMINT. |
